November IDPA Match
Today’s IDPA match at MCRC was the most fun I’ve had at a match in a LONG time, thanks in no small part to the rest of my squad. If you weren’t there, know that you missed a great match with a LOT of cool props.
IDPA Rules Addendum
IDPA has released a 10-page addendum to its rulebook. The really good news about this addendum is that it explicitly allows the use of Glock 17 magazines with Glock 19s. Previously, some clubs were saying this was not IDPA legal, because the magazine did not fit flush with the bottom of the magazine well.
Carrying a spare Glock 17 magazine if you carry a Glock 19 makes a LOT of sense. Here are the advantages:
- Two extra rounds (17 rounds vs. 15 rounds)
- The longer magazine makes it easier to seat the magazine all the way.
- It is no longer possible to pinch the skin on the palm of the hand gripping the gun between the bottom of the magazine well and the base pad of the magazine. (Ask me how I know about this….)
The disadvantage – or so I’ve heard – is that if the gun is at slide lock, it’s possible to push the magazine into the gun so hard that it damages the gun and/or magazine. I can’t really see how you’d do that if you reload like you should, but I guess it’s possible if you smack the base of the magazine as hard as you can AFTER you have already seated it.
Rule 3
I once took a random sample of my DVD collection, and divided the DVDs into two stacks if the cover featured a gun. It went on the “bad” stack if one or more of the four rules of gun safety were broken. It went on the “good” stack if all of the four rules were obeyed. When I was done, the “bad” stack held 14 DVDs. The “good” stack only held one DVD.
Is it any wonder that by the time people who have received their firearm education from Hollywood sometimes have a hard time obeying rule 3 (Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until the weapon is pointed at the target and you have made the decision to fire) when they make it to their first firearm class?
This Youtube clip, however, illustrates one of the reasons why trigger finger discipline is vital for your safety and the safety of those around you: the flinch reflex causes involuntary tightening of the finger’s muscles. If the user’s trigger finger is not where it’s supposed to be, pressure will be exerted on the trigger, and the gun will function as it was designed to.

SC Tax Holiday on Gun Purchases
This year, the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving will once again be a sales tax holiday on gun purchases in SC.
To be sure you can take advantage of this, it may be advisable to put your preferred gun on layaway, and then purchase it on one of those days.
On Tomorrow’s Election
If you can vote in the upcoming election, realize how lucky you are to be an American citizen, and make it count tomorrow.
No matter who wins or loses tomorrow, however, realize that it’s still up to you to make your life a success. Sure, lower government spending will be a good thing, but YOU still need to provide for the economic wellbeing and physical safety of you and yours no matter who is in office.
Dynamic Simulation Training
Gabe Suarez on training to fight with a gun:
Gunfighting skill does not mean shooting a group on a piece of paper, nor scoring a certain arbitrary score on someone’s “bitchin guy” course of fire.
No my friends, gunfighting entails the ability to bring your gun out from concealment, quickly and under duress, and use to kill another man, or men bent on doing you harm. That, and nothing else, is what it is all about. Sometimes that directness puts some students off. Well, I will not compromise our focus so someone with a tenuous hold on reality can feel better. We teach gunfighting.
