WWII vet murdered by two “unarmed kids”
Remember how some people were whining that George Zimmerman should have just taken his beating and moved on, rather than shooting the “unarmed kid” who was assaulting him?
Police say two teens assaulted 88-year-old Delbert Belton outside the Eagles Lodge in North Spokane Wednesday night around 8pm. Belton was rushed to the hospital where he was placed in the intensive care unit but later died. Police are actively searching for two suspects. They are described to be 16-19 in age, black males & both wearing black clothing, one was wearing a black “Do-Rag” police say.
More on the story here.
Because they were bored…
Christopher Lane, 22, of Melbourne, was found dead Friday while visiting the town of Duncan, where his girlfriend lives. Three boys, ages 15, 16, and 17, are in custody and face a court appearance Tuesday afternoon.
Apparently, these “boys” were bored, so they decided to murder someone.
More here. Expect this to get the same media attention that Trayvon Martin got. Not!

Florida’s Sun Sentinel went out and did some actual investigative reporting.
The rest of the story is here.
I can’t help but think that a lot of these stories would have had a happier ending if the victim had been armed and trained.
Carter Strange Case update
Judge Robert Hood on Monday sentenced 16-year-old Delarrett Canzater – one of eight attackers in the 2011 Carter Strange beating case in Five Points – to eight years in prison after Canzater pleaded guilty to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
….
Evidence indicated they went to Five Points “to find some wreck . . . a slang word that means they wanted to go out and beat somebody up,” prosecutor Dolly Justice Garfield told Hood.

Ohians shatter previous carry permit record
From CantonRep.com:
Stark County issued 1,367 licenses through the first half of 2013, as compared to the 1,341 permits — the now-previous record — issued in all of 2012.
Good for them! According to the article, about 4% of Ohians now have a carry permit.
3 shot, 1 killed in early morning shooting
This Thursday morning, a shootout at a Columbia home left 1 person dead, and 3 wounded. The deceased, one Jarrett D. Jackson, “may be a suspect”, according to WISTV. Details are sketchy, but from the fact that WISTV is showing a photo of Jarrett from the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, we can conclude that he is no stranger to law enforcement. It would be nice if WISTV would mention what he did to have his mugshot taken.
SLED is experiencing delays
From the SLED site:
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is experiencing a tremendous influx of concealed weapon permit applications, both new and renewal. The applications are processed in the order in which they are received, starting from the date SLED actually receives the application. Processing is taking the full ninety days on both new and renewals. Please know that we are processing all applications as quickly as possible, while maintaining the quality of backgrounds required by law. Your patience is greatly appreciated during this time.
*Below is a temporary change in the concealed weapons permit law enacted during the 2013 legislative session. Temporary provisos are enacted in the State budget and are only effective for the State fiscal year (July 1 – June 30); unless re-enacted they expire on June 30, 2014.
62.22. (CWP Renewal and Replacement) A concealed weapons permit may not be suspended by a state official, agent, or employee supported by state funds if the permit holder has initiated a renewal or replacement application and the processing and issuance of a renewal or replacement permit is delayed for administrative reasons. A concealed weapons permit remains valid during the pendency of the renewal or replacement process so long as the application for replacement renewal is submitted prior to the expiration of the permit.
Based on comments from my students, it’s pretty clear to me that applications are NOT being issued NOR renewed inside 90 days. If you have sent in the renewal, but not received your permit yet, make sure you read the last part of the above paragraph well.
In stark contrast, I just submitted my renewal for my Utah permit. The process was all on-line, including submitting the photograph, cost only $15.75 and I should have my permit in only a few weeks.
