Accidental shooting at Spartanburg County CWP course
When I teach a CWP course, there is a strong emphasis on keeping fingers out of trigger guards and keeping all guns pointed in a safe direction all the time. The fundamentals of marksmanship and the draw are all practiced dry (i.e., with unloaded guns) before any guns are loaded. Here is a good illustration of why I do it this way:
around 4:30 p.m Saturday during a live fire portion of the class a student was being shown the proper way to hold her pistol, when the gun fired striking the student standing next to her in the firing in line.
- Treat every firearm as if it is loaded
- Always keep the muzzle of the firearm pointed in a safe direction
- Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until the weapon is pointed at the target and you have decided to fire
- Be sure of your target and what is beyond it
Learn them and live them.
