Glock Gen 4 Recoil Spring Recall

October 2, 2011

Glock is recalling the recoil springs on Gen 4 Glocks bought before July 22, 2011: http://www.teamglock.com/customer-service/recoil-spring-exchange. I’d say give them a call and get your new recoil springs if yours are affected.

Home Invasion Countermeasures

September 18, 2011

In my area of operations, home invasion is gaining in popularity as a tactic used by criminals. Apparently, cold burglaries with very precise information are preferred, but if that won’t work home invasion is considered as a perfectly acceptable alternative.

Recently, I started looking for more information on countering this specific tactic. Most of what I found was well-meaning but impractical advice or products. There was, however, some good along with the bad that I thought was worth passing on.

Avoiding the gamer trap

July 10, 2011

I’ve heard all of these comments, some of them recently.

“All of this realistic training to win gunfights is getting in the way of my IDPA.”

“Practicing with my reloads that barely make power factor and barely cycle my gun has made my gun handling worse instead of better.”

“I can’t stop myself from walking backwards instead of pointing my toes in the direction I’m going. I’ve been a gamer for too long!”

All of these shooters had fallen into the gamer trap. I know I had, so I could relate.

Participating in gun games, just like most things, is good in moderation. When taken to extremes, however, it becomes easy to fall into the “gamer trap” where winning the game instead of winning your upcoming gunfight becomes priority #1. As Jim Cirillo, who was an accomplished competition shooter as well as the winner of many gunfights, put it: “It may take extra time in a sports match, but in reality it would save lives. To hell with the score!”

Keeping It Simple

March 7, 2011

I want my skillsets to work when I am just about to pass out from lack of oxygen….when I can’t make a crucial diagnostic evaluation to save my life…when I am so gassed out, smoked, and beat up that I could not even tell you my name…when my hands are shaking and I am about to crap myself from fear, exhaustion, effort, or a combination of all of the above.

I want robustness
I want stress-proofness
I want commonality across weapon systems as much as possible
I want few choices and a high probablity of success

I want minimal (did I say MINIMAL) techniques that I can ingrain deeply (did I say DEEPLY) through countless repetitions so that I can execute them without thought in the situations I described above….because I have experienced those times and know that I want to be able to function and succeed where others fail.

Updated FAQ for Tom Sotis class

February 23, 2011

What are the class times?
SAT 10am-2:30pm & SUN 9am-1:30pm.  We train straight through, no lunch break.

What should I bring?
A Nok training knife if you have one (If you don’t, Tom will provide one)
Water
Snacks
Eye protection
Gym shoes, tennis shoes, sneakers, or wrestling shoes
Forearm padding (your training partner will be banging their own forearms into these during the class, so nothing with hard plastic please; neoprene thigh wraps available from most sporting goods stores are highly recommended for this purpose)
Optional extra: blue gun in your normal carry holster

We will be wearing “normal” CCW clothing and gym shoes, not special martial-arts suits. Be sure to bring a “normal” cover garment for the accessing class. I’m saying “normal”, because this will be a very physical class.  Students will spend the class attacking, and getting attacked, with rubber training knives so it may be a little rough on the clothing.

What is the location?
The class will be at a MMA gym in West Columbia. Venue details will be emailed to registrants. The training floors at the school are hard foam padded so gym shoes, tennis shoes, sneakers, wrestling shoes, socked or bare feet will be required to train on them.

Do we have enough students signed up yet?
We are almost there, but not quite yet. If you’ve been meaning to sign up, be sure to do it soon.

How do I sign up?
Sign up through the AMOK site, which uses PayPal as its secure checkout mechanism. The place to sign up is here.

Why – What – How? The Purpose We Share

February 12, 2011

The world is a complicated place.  And every few years, it is good to refocus and reorient in the event that distractions have taken place.  And, we must admit, that in the past couple of years, we have all had our share of distractions.

What is our purpose? Everyone needs a cause or belief that motivates them and drives them to action.  It is the why of what we all do.  Everyone who is anyone of substance or consequence needs this purpose, otherwise they will stumble through life by accident, like a cow or..dare I say, a sheep.  This is ours.

We believe that every man and woman is free, but with that freedom also comes a great responsibility of self reliance and individuality.  The freedom to fail or to excel.  No earthly authority or government has that responsibility…only you.  While we would like everyone to excel, we cannot stop those who self-select for failure by anything other than example. Our message may inadvertently reach them, but our message is for those who self-select for excellence.  And, since our path is that of martial pursuits, our purpose is to make you, the excellent, as good and dangerous a fighter as possible.  To steal a cliché phrase from the Army, not be the best you can be, but be the most dangerous warrior you can become.
