Police Search for Robbery, Carjacking Suspects

October 13, 2010

Via WLTX:

Officers say late Monday night, two men with ski masks and gloves on kicked in the door of a home, then the bedroom door, and pulled a gun on a man and his wife.

….

Officers say two suspects approached a man in a white 1997 Cadillac DeVille, and showed that he had a gun. The suspect then demanded that the victim walk away from the car, and the two got inside and took the vehicle.

During the carjacking, the victim says one of the suspects fired a shot.

How would you have done, had you been in these situations?

Adding Georgia

September 26, 2010

There are currently three different ways being recommended to add Georgia to your list of states where you can legally carry: Florida, Pennsylvania and Utah non-resident permits.

Here is the cost of each of those:

Florida: $117 and a bunch of paperwork.

Pennsylvania: $26.00 and very little paperwork.

Utah: $62.25 and taking a course taught by a Utah-certified instructor.

Source: Handgunlaw.us.

As you can see, using the Pennsylvania non-resident license is the most cost-effective way of adding Georgia.

Update: As Bill points out in the comments, New Hampshire ($100 for a 4 year permit) is also an option. This used to be the go-to permit for South Carolinians to add Georgia, until the New Hampshire governor raised the cost from $20 to $100. Adding New Hampshire, however, does add a few more states than the Pennsylvania permit and the paperwork is not complicated. The individual CWP holder will need to decide which option best fits his/her travel pattern.

Is the pen really mightier than the sword?

From The State:

On Tuesday, Letitia Cason applied for a restraining order against her estranged husband.

By Wednesday morning, she was dead in an apartment off Percival Road.

….

At 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Charlie Cason allegedly broke into his wife’s apartment on Smallwood Road, which is off Percival Road in Richland County, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said. Letitia Cason fled her apartment and ran to a neighbor for help.

Cason chased his wife to the neighbor’s apartment and forced his way inside. There, he allegedly fired multiple shots at his wife and bullets hit her in the upper body, the sheriff’s report said.

She was taken to Palmetto Health Richland, where she died of multiple gunshot wounds, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.

Letitia Cason, 38, had two teenage children, and at least one of them witnessed the shooting, police reports said.

In some situations, a piece of paper isn’t nearly as useful as a gun and the ability to use it well.

Gaston beating victim remains in coma

September 20, 2010

From WISTV:

The family of a Gaston man beaten and burglarized say he’s still in a coma.

Investigators say 54-year-old Danny Shull was in his home along Busbee Road in Gaston Wednesday when he was attacked.

As painful as this reality may be for some to grasp, our home is not the safe sanctuary it should be.

Mindset

September 15, 2010

From WISTV.com:

ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS) – An Orangeburg woman is bruised, but not defeated after being attacked by a robber.

It happened in broad daylight as 66-year-old Christine Hollar was cleaning a rental property she owns.

Hollar says a masked man tackled her and put his knees in her back. Then she says he repeatedly slammed her head into the ground and pistol-whipped her.

Even with blood all over her, this fiery Scottish native did not back down. She says the man opened her car to steal her purse and she chased after him.

“So I decided I was going to jump him, which I did,” said Hollar. “I slammed the door into him so hard that he bolted out and ran down the alley way and I ran after him.”

But if the man tries to attack her again, he should consider this his warning. “I am going to get a gun, so if he comes after me again, I’m going to be certified and I’m going to get a permit and I’m going to shoot him,” said Hollar.

What can we learn from this incident? Three things jump out at me:

1. Mindset is more important than physical strength.

2. Bad things happen to good people in “safe” places.

3. The time to get serious about your personal protection is now, not after your first attack.

Getting the Most out of an SI Class

August 27, 2010

My fellow Suarez International instructor in South Carolina, Chris Upchurch, has just posted a very useful article on Warriortalk: Getting the Most out of an SI Class.

Suarez International classes are one of the best investments you can make when it comes to self defense. We’ve got a really great curriculum and our instructors are top notch (if I do say so myself ). As with many things in life, however, how much you get out of it depends on how much you put into it. A bit of preparation beforehand and some regular follow-up afterwards can dramatically increase the amount you learn and how much your skills increase. Based on my experience in quite a few SI classes, both before and after I became an instructor, here are some things that I think you can do to help you get as much out of the class as possible.

Read the whole thing, and the comments from other students and instructors following it here.

Close Range Gunfighting Scheduled

December 4-5: Close Range Gunfighting (signup starting soon)

Course description from the Suarez International site:

This is our flagship course and goes as far as you can safely go on a square range with live-fire pistols. The dynamic curriculum surpasses the traditional handgun methods commonly taught in most institutions and focuses of the use of the pistol in aggressive close range applications likely in individual civilian street encounters.

The class begins with a tune-up of the fundamentals, then we progress quickly to new skills such as Proactive and Reactive Manipulations, Shooting While Moving Off The X, Reality-Based Multiple Hostiles Engagement, 360 degree CQB Movement, Danger-Close Fighting, Bilateral Shooting, 360 degree After Action Assessment Methods, and Integrating the Flashlight and Other Tools into the Firing Platform. This is the life-saving material that is often ignored in many other programs. In two days, you will receive more information than most armed professionals ever get!

We must point out that THIS COURSE IS NOT FOR THE NOVICE SHOOTER.  If you have not received basic instruction, or have a question about your skill level, please call us first.

In my opinion, everyone who has a CWP should take this course.
