February IDPA Match
The February IDPA match at the Mid Carolina Rifle Club saw a turnout of 52 shooters, and featured 5 stages that would have felt right at home in a state match. Several new IDPA competitors and several Training for Life graduates attended. Here’s video of two of the stages:
Video is a useful after action assessment tool: sticking my Glock through the ports on stage 4 was NOT part of my plan. I was happy with how much I was able to adapt on stage 4: one of my first two shots was not optimal, but I made up for that by re-engaging the first target before leaving that port.
On stage 5, I decided to shoot the first three targets three times instead of the required two times. Maybe not the best match strategy, but let’s face it: shooting IDPA is fun! If you’ve brought the ammo, why not use it?
Other things of interest:
1. I heard that one shooter had a malfunction immediately after he hit the left pepper popper on stage 4, activating the dual disappearing charger targets. Avoiding malfunctions is as good a reason as any to stay away from ports and other pieces of cover. I hope this shooter had been practicing his malfunction drills…
2. A 2nd generation Glock 23 shed the very tip of its striker, effectively turning it into a short club until a new striker is installed. This just goes to show that everything man-made, including Glocks, is subject to breakage. That’s one of the reasons why it’s useful to carry a back-up gun, even if you already carry a normally uber-reliable Glock as your primary handgun.

Personal Protection In the Home
Two burglary suspects, homeowner wounded in northwest Harris County gunfight
A shootout in a northwest Harris County neighborhood left one burglary suspect dead late Friday morning.
The homeowner also wounded a second suspect who tried to run away before collapsing a couple of blocks from the scene.
…
Pablo Berruz said the suspects knocked on his door while he was away this morning. His son answered the door.
“They asked my son if we wanted lawn-mowing service. My son said ‘No,'” Berruz said. “But then I told my son he should know better than to open the door to anybody.”
That’s when the suspects moved on to another house and found themselves in the middle of a gunfight that ended one life and forever changed two others.
New Holster
Alex, Training For Life’s Lead Instructor, recently attended the Suarez International Combat Pistol Instructor course in Houston, and received some excellent training. One of the many highlights was trying out Gabe Suarez’s own Anarchangel holster during a lunch break. A good review of this recently introduced holster can be found here.
This holster is MUCH better than any other appendix carry holster Alex has experience with. An Anarchangel, its strong-side outside the waistband version (the Gideon Elite), and a sneaky belt will hopefully soon be on its way to Columbia, SC. Is anyone interested in a slightly used 5.11 Tactical Instructor Belt? 😉

WVOC: Four Suspects in Walmart Parking Lot Robberies
Police say the main suspect is 32-year-old Andres Guzman (pictured), whom they say approached a family in the latest incident the night of January 9th, asking for a ride and then pulling a gun on them along Leaphart Road.
The family’s three-year-old son was then snatched from their vehicle, thrown to the ground, and the man fired gunshots on each side of the youngster before a passerby scared him off.
Guzman is also accused of a similar confrontation with another family in November, and police are investigating to see if he might also be a suspect in the hold-up of an individual the week before that.

Can’t I just give the criminal what he wants?
How do you know the criminal doesn’t want more than you are willing to give?
